ABANTU for Development is a Non Governmental Organisation (NGO), established in October 1991.It is an NGO with special consultative status with the Economic and Social Council of the United Nations (ECOSOC). The organisation has operations in Western, Eastern and Southern Africa and offices in Nairobi (Kenya), Accra (Ghana) and Kaduna (Nigeria).  The Regional Office for Eastern and Southern Africa (ROESA) based in Nairobi was set up in July 1995. It is registered under the NGO Act – reg  No. OP.21/051/96219/933.

The word ABANTU means ‘people’ in many African languages and symbolizes the organization’s people-centered philosophy. The organization’s vision is “a world in which women and men are equal partners at all levels of decision-making and in creating sustainable development”.  Its mission is “to enhance the capacity of African people, especially women, to participate in development, political and economic structures of their countries.”

ABANTU therefore strives to increase the participation of women in decision-making and policy influencing on mainstream issues affecting development in Africa.  It does this by working at sustainable strengthening of the capacity of selected NGOs that work for and with women. The organization achieves this through training, policy analysis, organizational strengthening, resources mobilization as well as research on women’s participation in governance and policy-making.
